Third conditional | Unreal conditional in the past
The third conditional describes a hypothetical unreal situation in the past.
We are imagining the result of something that did not happen. We are imagining a different past.
The condition takes the past perfect tense.
The structure of the result part of the sentence is:
subject + would have + the past participle form of the verb.
"would" is a type of modal. We can use other modals in the third conditional, such as "might" and "could". I explain their meaning with clear examples in this video.
I also explain the difference between the second and third conditional with examples.
This video will be of particular interest to ESL students and teachers.
The accent is a British English accent.
