CSCI 3151 - M02 - Supervised, unsupervised, self- & semi-supervised

Once we agree on what machine learning is, the next question is: what exactly is being learned, and what information do we assume we have? This lecture introduces the major learning paradigms—supervised, unsupervised, self-supervised, and semi-supervised—and shows how they differ in data assumptions, objectives, and evaluation.

You’ll see how the same dataset can lead to very different problem formulations depending on what labels (if any) are available, and why these distinctions matter for both theory and practice.
