Although the Australian Magpie's plumage pattern varies across its range, it is black and white. Males have a white neck, upper tail, and shoulder; females have a grey coloration.

The rest of the body is black throughout most of Australia. The back and rump are totally white in Tasmania, the extreme south-west, the center, and the south-east. Adult birds have chestnut brown eyes.
