illegal hunting of small birds in Italy - Where your garden birds become dinner
In the Mediterranean countries about 25 million birds are killed illegally each year. Some of these are small song birds (passerines) that are used for food in traditional cuisine like Pollenta e osei in Italy. In other countries these birds are hunted just for fun where the birds are killed for nothing more than human entertainment. The poachers don't discriminate between common or rare species and several of the species show strong decline in their population and are indeed in danger of going extinct. Traps such as snares, glue sticks and mist nets are cruel as the birds' death often is slow and painful as the birds freeze or stress themselves to death while caught in the traps. Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) is a German based volunteer organisation that has faught against this wildlife crime in several countries since 1975. This is a story where the I followed their work for two weeks in Northern Italy in October 2016.
