For this portrait I knew I had to make sure I captured the beautiful, rich colours. The deep browns and reds that lie underneath the details, for this I used unison pastels as a base layer. Unison pastels will beat pastel pencils any day for their richness in colour. I have tried to do the same with PanPastels in the past and find that they fill in the paper too much and won’t allow any pastel pencil to put detail on top. Unison pastels seem to be different in that even though they’re very creamy and soft, they leave behind a sanded surface of their own to allow pastel pencils to still work over the top of them.
