Though the nocturnal activities of southern flying squirrels make them hard to detect, they will take up residence in just about any kind of nest box in a suburban setting as long as deciduous trees are nearby. Flat-bottom, bluebird boxes work very well. I have three boxes around our home and all are used by flying squirrels. Place a little peanut butter at the hole entrance and they will pop their head out to lick it up.
