LibraryJams: Shasha
Meeting an artist as famous as Shasha is always a nerve-wrecking experience, as you never know if the fame has brought some arrogance with it. But not with Shasha, who was the most polite, almost timid person when she walked into our institute - patiently spelling out her name for our receptionist when we had to take care of the covid protocol. On stage, she continued with that calm demeanor, surprising us with a live instrumented version of her Amapiano Hit „Tender Love“. But that was only a teaser, as she soon delved into her back-catalogue of hits that had the entire library on their feet, dancing and enjoying the uniquely South African sound of Amapiano. The thumping bass and staggering log drums are complemented well by Shasha’s unique voice, which was carved by her years of experience in church choirs. Apart from her singing, she also made sure that the audience got a good workout in – that is the beauty of music with a groove, you just can’t sit still!

As the Goethe-Institut, we always strive for new ways to support local arts and culture.
Our musical series LibraryJams aims to create performing and income-generating opportunities for artists in a safe environment - while simultaneously producing fresh digital content. Three artists perform short concerts in front of a small, select audience in our library, while their performances are recorded and then later released in a video series. Think Tiny Desk Concerts, but in a Joburg library!
The first event happened on Friday, 20 November with exclusive, intimate performances by The Charles Géne Suite, Zoë Modiga and ShaSha.
