The Cruelest 40 seconds: The Growing Suicide Epidemic | Nick Bracks | TEDxDocklands

Mental Health is a global epidemic and one of the leading disease burdens, and suicide is a growing issue. Globally, around one in four people will be affected by a mental or neurological disorder, around 450 million people suffer from such conditions, and on average, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds. Based on a decade of experience working as a Mental Health Advocate, Facilitator, and Change Maker, Nick Bracks addresses this epidemic and offers insights into how we can collectively make change as individuals. He shares his own personal battle, and uses this to highlight global issues, such as social media, how disconnected we have become (despite being more connected than ever through technology), and how we need to stop putting on facades and show more vulnerability.

Nick Bracks has spent the past decade as a Passionate Advocate for Mental Health Issues, spreading his message all over the world. In line with his work in the entertainment industry; as an Actor and Personality, Nick uses his voice and platform to educate through mediums such as his training company, seminars, public awareness, supporting initiatives, and day to day conversations. Having conducted over 1,000 mental health seminars and training workshops, Nick’s message has been delivered at some of the world’s largest employers, government organisations, schools and universities. Nick’s early career in the fashion and entertainment industries ultimately led him to his ongoing work in mental health awareness. He earned international modelling contracts and made regular appearances on Australian television as a presenter as well as a personality. During his time on Dancing with the Stars, Nick publicly spoke about his experience with depression and anxiety for the first time.
Nick has advocated alongside some of Australia’s largest mental health-focussed organisations by candidly recounting the mental health issues he has struggled with since age 11, including a particularly difficult period when injury forced an early end to his initial career as a competitive athlete. He has spoken to audiences of 1000+ at schools and corporate events around the country as well as presenting a TED Talk covering how creative and entrepreneurial drive can help combat depression. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
