She was born as Valerie Anne Poxleitner in Ontario, Canada. Her parents were both missionaries and her father taught her to play the guitar. At the age of 18 she moved to Toronto and changed her name to Lights, a nickname derived from her surname.

Lights had her first chart-success in 2008 when her single 'Drive My Soul' peaked at #18 in the Canadian Hot 100. After singing a record deal she released her self-titled EP that year and in 2009 her first album 'The Listening' which peaked at #7 in the Canadian album charts. She won the Juno Award (Canada's version of the Grammys) for New Artist of the Year.

In 2011 Lights released her 2nd album Siberia and peaked at #3 in the Canadian album charts, her best result to this day. The album also charted in the USA and peaked at #47. Like 'The Listening' it has been certified Gold in her homecountry. In 2014 she released her 3rd studio album 'Little Machines' which peaked at #5 in Canada and #34 in the USA, her best result there. It has been certified Gold as well in her homecountry.

In 2014 she released her 4th studio album 'Skin&Earth' which peaked at #3 in Canada and #95 in the USA. In 2020 she released an album called 'How To Sleep When Your Bed's On Fire' with all the proceeds going to the Black Lives Matter-campaign in Vancouver.
