Nirvana - Verse Chorus Verse [Lyrics]
Songwriter: Kurt Cobain
Writing Period: Unknown
Recording Session: 05-06/91 Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, CA
Common Mislabels: In His Hands - VCV - In His Room - Utopia in Hell - Utopia in Defeat - Without a Shape - Aneurysm - Token Eastern Song
In the last week of April 1991, NIRVANA journeyed down to Los Angeles to begin recording their major label debut, Nevermind. It was the band's own decision to have Butch Vig as their producer, choosing him over several other big-name producers, including Scott Litt, Don Dixon and David Briggs. Vig had built up a good rapport with the band through his work on the Smart sessions. "It was such a great experience working with him in Madison", recalls Krist Novoselic. "The label wanted us to work with other people, but it was kinda intimidating, and we were comfortable with Butch."
"At that point, I'd never done any work in Los Angeles", says Vig, "but I knew that was where the band wanted to work, and I knew of Sound City's reputation. The studio is renowned for it's large live room and vintage Neve 8028 console. I worked out a deal so it was cost-effective for us to go there. It was sight unseen. We just booked it and went in."
The band recorded Verse Chorus Verse live, with Cobain providing a scratch vocal. Cobain then overdubbed three guitars to complement the bass and drums. Although the song was finished instrumentally, Cobain never recorded a formal lead vocal part.
from Disc 2 of "With the Lights Out"
Lyrics
Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, may I just give in?
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Neither side is sacred, crawling in a hole
The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Reinventing what we knew
Taken time is all but true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, but I can't give in
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Feeling so sedated when I'm in my home
The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps it clear
Reinventing what we knew
Taken time is weird but true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, may I just give in?
Takin' medication till my stomach's full
Feeling so sedated when I'm in my home
The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps it clear
Reinventing what we knew
Love is history, all but true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
