RIPPED UP! Rushenden Pier Railway, Isle of Sheppey

This is the Rushenden Pier Branch off the Sheerness Line on the Isle of Sheppey. The branch runs off the Sheerness Line near Queenborough, through the former Invicta Marchant Bar steelworks (formally Queenborough Rolling Mill), then onwards to the Rushenden Pier/Jetty on the River Swale. This steelworks actually used to process old railway tracks and turn them into steel concrete reinforcement. From the steelworks yard, shunters would bring up scrap metal brought in on ships at the jetty and then shunted to the Invicta Marchant Bar steelworks. The site was closed in 2013 and is now being redeveloped into houses.

Most of the track was still in place in 2013 but since then it has been completely ripped up. I follow where the track once was right up to the jetty located at Coal Washers Wharf. The jetty is in a poor state and is broken up in several places. Sheppey used to have a larger steelworks but that was closed in 2012.

Sheerness Port is now used primarily as a HUGE storage yard for imported vehicles. The former Sheerness Steelworks has been demolished and is now a storage yard for new cars that have been imported on ships. The port once had a rail link but not any more. All the new vehicles are shipped out on car transporters by road.
