In this tutorial video Brent from the DIY home renovation blog, Gray House Studio walks you through how to cut a large mirror. In this video he takes a mirror that spanned a whole vanity and recycles it by cutting it into two separate narrow mirrors that can be framed and hung back up over each sink.

This a great DIY solution because it is already the correct height needed and it saves you money because you are using what you already have instead of having to buy two new mirrors.

The first thing you will need to do is mark the width you want the mirror to be. In this example we want to make this mirror 21 inches wide. Use a ruler and a Sharpie to make the mark. You could also use a wax marker or crayon to make the mark but a Sharpie works fine and is easy to wipe off.

Next, take your board and clamp it down to the mirror and surface space. The board will act as a straightedge so when you drag the cutter to score the glass, the mirror won't move.

Now you will need some all purpose oil and your glass cutter. The all purpose oil will sit on the glass and keep the cutter cool as it scores the glass.

After you add a few drops of oil on the glass, rub it over to where you will be cutting the mirror. Then take your blade and push down with a firm amount of pressure and score the glass in one take. If you stop and start over then you will end up with two scores and the glass won't break correctly.

Once you get it scored all the way, you can remove the clamp and the board. Now you are going to use the little metal part on the back of the cutter.

Lift up the mirror and tap on the back side of it with the metal part on the back of the cutter. The mirror should now be cut into two pieces along the line you scored it.

Be careful handling the mirror once you get it cut because the edge you cut will be pretty sharp. You can use some fine grit sandpaper to smooth it down making it a lot smoother to handle when you are framing it.

That is our technique for cutting a mirror. Thanks for watching. We hope you learned an easy way to cut a mirror. If you have any questions or comments about this video, please leave them below and we will do our best to answer them.
