The Night Carole King Found Her Voice

Carole King, born in 1942, became one of the most successful singer-songwriters in music history. By 1970, she had written dozens of hits for other artists but had never performed live herself. That changed at the Troubadour club in Los Angeles when she was invited to perform with James Taylor. Terrified to sing on stage, she found the courage through Taylor’s encouragement and performed *“So Far Away,”* moving the audience with her raw emotion. That night gave her the confidence to record *Tapestry* in 1971, an album that became one of the best-selling of all time and cemented her as a music legend.
