Even though players and supporters will be back for the 2021-22 season, 'ABC' says that construction work at the Bernabeu will be finished in December 2022. This is due to the fact that it is not the pitch which is being relayed. Other areas of the stadium are also being upgraded while matches are being played at the stadium.

Real Madrid are planning to return to the stadium on 12th September when they will face Celta Vigo at the start of the 2021-22 season. Work will continue at the Santiago Bernabeu until December 2022. 'ABC' reports it will be completed by this date and the club also want it to be done by then.

It responds to several aspects of reforms that need to be finalised so that fans and players return to the stadium. The pitch, the stadium's structure and the tunnel must be finished before matches return, but other areas can be redeveloped while matches continue.

Madrid's plan is for work to go on every day except on matchdays. The coronavirus pandemic allowed work to go ahead at a quicker rate as there were no matches at the stadium.

Construction at the Santiago Bernabeu has become something attractive to fans, people who love architecture and to pedestrians who walk near the stadium. The enormous cranes which can move objects which weigh tonnes also do not go unnoticed.
