How To Treat Silty River Water With "Alum"
SEPTEMBER 28th, 2011 Filmed on location at The Green River in Canyonlands National Park, Utah.
Aluminum Sulfate or "Alum". This is a great way for all you river rats out there who want to use river water as your source of drinking water but want a way to clean out the silt, mud, and sediment without destroying a brand new water filter.
Mix 1 to 1.5 ounces of alum powder into a Nalgene bottle full of water. In this video, I use a Klean Kanteen. Once the Alum powder dissolves, you have enough alum concentate for about 2 weeks of river rafting!
Add 2 capfulls of the Alum concentrate to a 5 gallon bucket of silty, muddy river water and stir up the mixture in the bucket.
Wait about 30 to 45 minutes and the sediments and silt and mud and the alum will sink down to the bottom of the bucket leaving you with clean water that you can then filter off using your favorite water filter. We used 2 Katadyn Hiker Pro water filers to pump the clean water into our canteens and 2 1 gallon jugs of water.
YouTube user "RebLin51" came up with a ratio that works for backpackers! Try this:
Mix 1/8 of a tablespoon of dry alum powder to a small amount of water... a film canister would do the trick. Add about half the mixture to a quart of silty water and stir. Wait about 20 to 30 mins and your water should be clear and ready for filtering.
I purchased my Alum really cheap and got excellent service at:
