Home Row Mods Don’t Have to Suck

Home row mods sound amazing until you actually try them and realize the delay can feel terrible. In this video, I show how I fixed that on my ZMK keyboard config using Timeless Homerow Mods, based on urob’s ZMK setup.

The idea is simple: instead of using your modifier keys outside the home row, keys like A, S, D, F and the right-hand home row keys can become Control, Shift, Option, and Command when held. This can make keyboard shortcuts faster and more ergonomic, especially on a split keyboard like the Toucan.

The problem is that traditional home row mods usually depend on timing. Tap the key and it types the letter. Hold the key long enough and it becomes a modifier. That delay is what makes home row mods feel annoying for a lot of people.

With Timeless Homerow Mods, the setup works much better by using cross-handed modifiers. For example, if I want Command Tab, Command T, Control U, or Control D, I use the modifier on the opposite hand. That makes shortcuts feel instant, while normal typing still feels clean and natural.
