Quicksink: The Future of Naval War #usarmy #shorts

The QUICKSINK program is a high-priority initiative by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Munitions Directorate. It was publicly unveiled through successful live-fire tests in 2022 and 2024. Traditionally, sinking a large moving vessel required either an expensive anti-ship missile or a heavy torpedo launched from a submarine. A single MK-48 torpedo can cost over $5 million. QUICKSINK aims to achieve the same result using a standard GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), which costs around $30,000.

The genius of QUICKSINK lies in its seeker head and its targeting logic. While standard JDAMs use GPS to hit static coordinates, QUICKSINK utilizes a modified seeker that can track a moving ship in all weather conditions. More importantly, it is programmed to achieve a "near-miss" detonation just below the surface. This mimics the "torpedo effect": the explosion creates a temporary void (bubble) in the water. Without the buoyancy of the water to support it, the thousands of tons of steel in the ship's center succumb to gravity, causing the hull to literally snap in half. This development represents a massive shift in maritime warfare, allowing a single B-52 or even an F-15 to neutralize a major surface threat with a munitions budget that is 100 times smaller than previous requirements.
