Burke: Wage increases ‘part of the equation’ for economic growth
Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations Tony Burke told Sky News the minimum wage increase is an important part of the “equation” to get the economy moving.
The FairWork Commission has awarded an $18.80 a week minimum wage increase which will see the new base rate of pay at $20.33 an hour or around $770 a week.
“Ultimately the pathway to job creation, the pathway to getting the economy moving is secure jobs and better pay,” Mr Burke said.
“For every business that will complain and say … they’d rather their wages wouldn’t go up for their employees, they all want their wages to go up for their customers.
“To get the economy moving we need people to be spending money, and if you want domestic consumption to go up, people need two things: they need secure jobs, and they need good pay.
“This pay increase is part of that equation".
