In 1980, a California man claimed ownership of the Moon.
It sounded like science fiction, but Dennis Hope believed he had found a legal loophole. After reading the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty, he noticed it prevented nations from claiming celestial bodies, but said nothing clearly about private individuals. So he filed a declaration of ownership for the Moon and later extended his claim to other planets.
Most people laughed. But Hope turned the idea into a business called Lunar Embassy. He began selling lunar “property” deeds for small fees, offering customers novelty certificates for plots measured in acres. Over the decades, he claims to have sold more than 611 million acres, reportedly earning around 12 million dollars. Buyers allegedly included celebrities and even three former U.S. presidents, though these purchases were symbolic rather than legally recognised.
Legally, his claim holds no standing under international space law. The Outer Space Treaty makes it clear that no nation can own the Moon, and most legal experts argue that individuals cannot bypass that rule. Still, the idea captured imaginations around the world. It tapped into humanity’s long tradition of frontier dreaming, turning space exploration into a playful piece of pop culture history.
