When essential oils become idols

Distilled oils are mentioned throughout the Bible, as God directed for anointing and healing. Today, essential oils also have practical applications. I personally use essential oils for my homemade skin care, for household cleaning, and for fragrance. Essential oils are spiritually neutral, unless they become idols.

Some people use essential oils for witchcraft spells, and as new age idols. The Mormon-based MLM essential oil company, Young Living, promotes astrology in their marketing campaigns and says that their “abundance oil” was used by ancient cultures to attract prosperity and that they sell oils from the Bible that help with “visualizing.” The Mormon-based MLM essential oil company Doterra created their own phrase, Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade which they trademarked to imply high quality oils.

If you believe that oils have magical powers apart from God, they have become an idol. If you are obsessed with oils, and you think about them more than you think about Jesus, they have become an idol. If the oils are on the throne of your heart, instead of God, the oils have become an idol.
