A pesar de haber salvado a México de una guerra que hubiera sido devastadora la venta de la Mesilla fue utilizada por los rivales políticos de Santa Anna para desbaratar su reputación y tildarle de traidor y ‘vendepatrias’, poniendo fin a su carrera política.
