Making Medieval Paintbrushes

Learn how to make medieval paintbrushes using Cennino Cennini’s instructions from Il Libro Del Arte or the Craftsman’s Handbook from 1437 Italy. You’ll learn how to make first a squirrel paintbrush and then one using sable/mink fur.

Most supplies are found online. Squirrel fur is used for tying fishing flies. Sable fur is harder to find but can be found from many online furriers. If you collect wild fur or feathers, please make sure that you abide by all local, state, and federal laws and regulations such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The waxed thread I used is a bit thicker than sewing thread, about the size of thread used for shoe making. The extra bulk and wax helps the brush head stick in the feather tube.

The glue is a fish glue found at John Neal Booksellers but most glues will work fine.
