Then again - they cost thousands in today's money - had umpteen different standards (SVR, U-Matic, VCR, VCR-LP, Betamax and VHS - to name a few) - and being filled with springs, multi-switches, wires, cords and cooker parts, you needed a resident engineer to keep the damn things going!
