The Day York House Came Down | Demolition of a Bradford Landmark

York House stood on the Thorpe Edge Estate in Eccleshill, Bradford, for over seventy years.

Built during the optimism of Britain's post-war rebuilding programme, these modern council flats represented a new beginning for many local families. Clean, spacious homes with indoor facilities and modern conveniences offered opportunities that previous generations could only dream about.

For me, York House was more than just a building.

My parents and I were among the first families to move into the flats, and Number 53 became our first real family home. I spent the first seven years of my life there before our growing family moved on.

Over the decades the fortunes of York House changed. What began as a symbol of hope gradually became a building many felt had reached the end of its useful life. In September 2024 I returned with my drone to record its final days as demolition crews slowly dismantled the structure floor by floor.

As the excavators eventually tore through the remains of my old flat, I found myself reflecting on the thousands of lives that had passed through those corridors, stairwells and rooms. While many local residents welcomed the demolition, I could not help feeling a sense of loss for a place that once meant so much to so many.

This film documents the demolition of York House and preserves the final chapter of a building that played a small part in Bradford's post-war story.
