Take Me Out to the Ball Fields of Old Hot Springs - Tribute to Babe Ruth

"Take Me Out to the Ball Fields of Old Hot Springs" was commissioned by the Committee to Commemorate Babe Ruth to celebrate the opening of Majestic Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a new, world-class youth and tournament-level baseball complex built on a historic site where many dozens of baseball's greatest ballplayers played, trained, and coached. This, too, is where Babe Ruth attended his first spring training as a major leaguer, in 1915, as a top-tier pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.

For millennia, Native Americans have visited the "Valley of the Vapors", their name for what is now known as Hot Springs National Park. Renowned around the world for its healing waters, Hot Springs became "The Birthplace of Spring Training" when baseball immortal Albert Spalding sent his legendary Chicago White Stockings to town in March of 1886 to "take the baths" and "hike the hills". The venture proved so successful that for more than forty years Hot Springs became a mecca for professional baseball spring training. Nearly half of all players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame trained in Hot Springs.

This wondrous baseball history is spectacularly documented by both the Hot Springs Baseball Trail in the city of Hot Springs, and by the multi Mid-America Emmy Award winning documentary film, "The First Boys of Spring", narrated by Hollywood stars Billy Bob Thornton (born and raised in Hot Springs) and Peter Coyote.

Babe Ruth changed the game of baseball forever when, in spring training for the Red Sox, he hit the first five hundred foot home run, a Herculean/Ruthian feat. To this day, over a century later, extremely few ballplayers, even among baseball's greatest batters, have ever hit a baseball anywhere near 500 feet.

After being sold by Boston to the New York Yankees, Babe continued to train in Hot Springs, including in 1921, when he produced the greatest individual slugging season of all time, one still not matched, and one that will likely never be matched.
