🔦 A femtolaser to create a laser
“Going through the exercise of painful complex optical alignments makes you dream of simpler and more reliable ways to align complex optics.” - Yves Bellouard, Head of GALATEA Lab at EPFL. He and his team study how lasers interact with materials and what the potential applications are in microengineering. To carry out many of their research projects, they use femtosecond lasers, which requires fastidious alignment of the optics.
Their solution to simplify the process? Make another femtosecond laser, one that can fit in the palm of one’s hand and which is made out of glass, a stable and transparent material that has a lower thermal expansion. Using a commercial femtosecond laser, Yves Bellouard's team etches special cavities in the glass that allow for the precise placement of the essential components of their laser. They then use the interaction between matter and light to align the mirrors.
The Galatea Lab will explore the use of this technology in the context of quantum optical system assembly. It is also to be spun-off by Cassio-P, a start-up run by Antoine Delgoffe, one of the researchers involved in the research.
