A Brief Introduction to the Book of Habakkuk
A introduction to the amazing book of Habakkuk.
*HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE MINOR PROPHETS
-Northern Kingdom consisted of ten tribes called "Israel." The capital city of Israel was "Samaria." Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC. But the Assyrians were later conquered by the Babylonians.
-Southern Kingdom consisted of two tribes called "Judah." The capital city of Judah was "Jerusalem." Judah was conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BC (but with other conquests in 605 BC and 597 BC). But the Babylonians were later conquered by the Persians.
-Returns from Persia by the Jew happened three different times. First in 538 BC (see Ezra 1-6) led by Zerubbabel. Second in 458 BC (see Ezra 7-10) led by Ezra. Third in 444 BC led by Nehemiah.
*AUTHOR
Habakkuk was a man who knew the Old Testament well. The Bible tells us his name and his profession (Habakkuk 1:1 and 3:1 say he was a prophet), not much else.
*AUDIENCE
The nation of Judah just before the Babylonians come and conquer them.
*DATE
606-604 B.C. under King Jehoakim's reign.
*OUTLINE (from Wiersbe)
-The Prophet Wondering and Worrying (Habakkuk 1)
-The Prophet Watching and Waiting (Habakkuk 2)
The Prophet Worshiping and Witnessing (Habakkuk 3)
*KEY VERSE
“Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked. But the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God.” (Habakkuk 2:4, NLT, which is also quoted in Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38)
*THEME
The just shall live by faith (based on Habakkuk 2:4)
I have found Ron Blue's comments about Habakkuk helpful, "Habakkuk's book begins with an interrogation of God but ends as an intercession to God. Worry is transformed into worship. Fear turns to faith. Terror becomes trust. Hang-ups are resolved with hope. Anguish melts into adoration" (Ron Blue, "Habakkuk" in the Bible Knowledge Commentary, vol. 1, p. 1507).
