Jim Jordan loses second US House speaker vote

Republican Jim Jordan has lost a second vote to become US House speaker.

Mr Jordan lost the backing of two more of his colleagues since the first vote.

199 Republicans voted for Mr Jordan for the position, while all 212 Democrats voted for minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, all falling short of the 217 votes needed to elect a speaker.

Mr Jordan says he intends to continue his candidacy for the position.

Some members of both parties said they are open to granting additional powers to temporary speaker Patrick McHenry to pass critical funding bills and avert a government shutdown next month.
