“Eleanor & Edsel Ford and Their Circle of Architects” by Brian McMahon (Bicknell Series: 2021-2022)

This lecture was co-sponsored during Preservation Month by the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. For more information on the Ford House, visit http://www.fordhouse.org.

This lecture discussed a portion of the upcoming Wayne State University Press book (to be published in 2023), “The Mega Builder: Henry Ford and His Circle of Architects.” This book will tell the story of the impact that Mr. Ford and his son, Edsel Ford had on architecture, engineering and building technology and the many architects, landscape architects, industrial and interior designers that worked with the Fords.

Presenter Brian McMahon is a trained architect with degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the Pratt Institute School of Architecture. He has lectured and written extensively on industry, urban history and the architecture. His first book, “The Ford Century in Minnesota,” tells the story of Ford Motor Company production in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota from the Model T era through the closure of the Twin Cities Assembly Plant in 2011. You can purchase “The Ford Century in Minnesota” through the University of Minnesota Press here: https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/the-ford-century-in-minnesota.

About the Bicknell Lecture Series:
In 1987, Dr. Frank Bicknell, a long time Grosse Pointe resident and well-known Detroit Medical Center urologist, celebrated his 80th birthday. His daughter and son-in-law established the Grosse Pointe Historical Society's Bicknell Fund to mark his milestone birthday. This fund established the Dr. Frank Bicknell Lecture Series; all Bicknell Lectures are free of charge and open to everyone.
