GERD Secondary to PTSD: How to Prove Service Connection
What is GERD?
GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, is when stomach acid constantly backs up into your esophagus. That leads to heartburn, acid reflux, chest pain, and even trouble swallowing.
Now, how does PTSD tie into that?
When you live with PTSD, your body is in a constant state of fight or flight.
That stress triggers hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which increase stomach acid production and tighten the muscles in your digestive tract.
Over time, that chronic stress response damages your gut, causes acid reflux, ulcers, and even irritable bowel issues.
And here’s the key — that’s your secondary connection.
If you’re already service-connected for PTSD, and your doctor can show that your GERD is caused or aggravated by that PTSD, you’ve got a legitimate secondary service connection claim.
