Safebloc: Basic Setup | Arborist Rigging Basics

Arborist Rigging | Safebloc: Basic Setup

The Safebloc, by the 'X-man' J. David Driver, fundamentally changed the nature of negative rigging for me. The added friction helps to convert tension forces into heat, dissipating peak forces exerted on the tree. This is a game changer in sketchy or dangerous trees, and makes all the difference in big wood.

In this short video, I show the Safebloc being used on a 10ft chunk of Sugar Maple at the cemetery. This tree was recently dead, but the wood was still very heavy.

Basic concept is this:
1. Install tag line up top to help pull the piece over (not always necessary).
2. Install Safebloc on trunk.
3. Cut face.
4. Install rigging line through Safebloc and tie onto piece.
5. Make back cut and pull piece over, letting it run as far as possible.

So, what about you? Do you use a Safebloc for your rigging? Hit me up with questions and comments below.

This Safebloc was custom-spliced for me by my friend Peter DeVries. He does all of my custom splicing: slings, rings, ropes, and lanyards. You can check out his page on Instagram:
