Our story begins with a 74-gun ship of the line - Montanes - launched in 1794 at the Royal Shipyard of Ferrol, one of Spain's main naval bases at the end of the 18th century. This shipyard was renowned for using some of the finest timber in the world - Cuban red cedar and mahogany, both harder than European oak and far more resistant to rot in tropical climates.
With 2,400 copper plates covering her hull, she was significantly faster than most ships of her era - capable of reaching up to 14 knots with the wind, compared to an average of 10, and around 10 knots against it, where others struggled to make 8. But the name "Montanes" - meaning "Highlander" or "Man of the Mountains" - came from a mountain region in Spain. And in many ways, it proved prophetic: the ship was as solid as a rock, yet remarkably fast.
The most intriguing part lies in her design.
She was built according to the plans of the renowned naval architect
Romero de Landa. Formally, she belonged to the class of "74-gun ships" - the gold standard of the age.
Thanks to a brilliant calculation of her center of gravity, Montanes became one of the fastest ships in the Spanish fleet. She could sail closer to the wind than her opponents - a decisive advantage in battle.
