How To Make A Simple Balsa Crankbait
Docs Minnow Balsa Crankbait Template available at https://makewoodenlures.com/making-balsa-crankbaits-balsa-lures/
Balsa crankbaits are awesome to make and great fun to fish with. In this beginners tutorial I show you how to make a very simple balsa wood lure using minimal tools and equipment. This is a beginners lure that most people could start and finish this weekend - but it's a deadly fish catcher nonetheless!
This video is the first of a series aimed at encouraging beginners into lure making. Over the next few videos we'll work our way through a few different patterns of handmade wooden lures, keeping it super simple. All of the balsa lures we'll make use the same basic kit of tools and materials.
Balsa crankbaits are an ideal starting point for newbies to wooden lure making. As a raw material, this timber works easily, is easy to get your hands on and has a nice, crisp action that's deadly on a lot of species.
The tools you'll need for handmade balsa crankbaits are very simple…… In fact, you probably own everything you need already! A handsaw, knife or chisel, pliers and battery drill make up the basic kit. Balsa wood, epoxy, sandpaper, small ball sinkers, wire, hooks and rings make up the materials.
And of course, you'll be wanting some paint to pimp your handmade lures up!
The process for making homemade balsa crankbaits is fairly straightforward. Start by downloading the template from my website, printing it and cutting it out. Then use the template to lay out the side profile. Cut the blanks, square them, drill for twist eyes and weights, cut the top profile, sand, harden and paint!
Of course, Doc's Minnow is just a starting point and you'll find that making balsa crankbaits (and other balsa lures) quickly becomes addictive. Once you've made this little lure a couple of times you'll probably find yourself making balsa crankbait designs, or branching into other styles of balsa lures….. like the other projects in this series!
