Modern physics increasingly treats space and time not as the foundation of reality, but as an effective description that may break down at the deepest scales. The shift begins where gravity, quantum theory, and black holes stop agreeing.

Why Some Physicists Think Spacetime Could Be an Emergent Illusion comes into focus through the conflict between general relativity and quantum mechanics, especially near singularities and the Planck scale. Einstein’s 1915 picture of curved spacetime remains extraordinarily successful, yet black hole thermodynamics, Hawking’s 1974 radiation result, and the information paradox pushed theorists toward holography, where information in a volume may be encoded on a boundary. Maldacena’s 1997 AdS/CFT correspondence gave a precise model in which geometry emerges from a lower-dimensional quantum field theory, while work by Van Raamsdonk, ER=EPR, tensor networks, and quantum error correction linked gravitational structure to entanglement itself. Parallel approaches including loop quantum gravity, spin networks, causal set theory, matrix models, and the Wheeler-DeWitt problem of time all question whether continuity, locality, and even temporal flow are fundamental. Recent results such as the Page curve and island formula further suggest that the interior of spacetime may be derived from quantum information rather than assumed at the start.
