Kashmir has officially entered Chillai Kalan, the harshest phase of winter that lasts for 40 days. The term Chillai Kalan comes from Persian and means “Great Cold.” This period begins every year from December 21 to January 29, bringing extreme cold, freezing temperatures, and heavy snowfall across the Kashmir Valley.
During Chillai Kalan, temperatures drop well below zero, rivers and lakes freeze, and daily life is severely affected. With the start of Chillai Kalan on December 21, several parts of Kashmir witnessed intense snowfall, marking the beginning of the coldest days of the season. After this phase, Kashmir experiences a relatively milder period known as Chillai Khurd (Baby Cold).
