I tried to capture the slightly more modern May Day celebrations of today along with the ancient Beltane celebration from Bernard Cornwell’s book Excalibur. Though I read it quite a while ago, this scene has always stuck with me. For the beginning of the playlist, I tried to find songs that were celebratory, yet dark, trying to match the mood of the scene as the sun is setting and the whole village is hiking up a hill to light their bonfire. They continue their celebrations through the night, walking between the bonfires, praying to the gods and lighting their hearths with the new sacred flame. I then looked for songs of a bright and more cheerful note to match the sun rise and the continued celebrations that we still do today, such as the May Pole dance. The celebrations continue until the sunset of Beltane when a final sacrifice must be made...
