Socotra Island – Episode 1: Hoq Cave

Exploring Hoc Cave on Socotra Island is the closest you can get to visiting an alien planet. It is located near Saqra Village in the middle of the Momi Heights in the north of this island, its entrance overlooking the Arabian Sea.
Socotra, Yemen, due to its remote location between Somalia and the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the most inaccessible islands on earth. The outbreak of civil war in mainland Yemen has made Socotra even more difficult to reach.
But also in geological terms, Socotra is the “most otherworldly place on our planet”. The archipelago was once part of the supercontinent of Gondwana and detached during the Miocene epoch, in the same set of rifting events that opened the Gulf of Aden to its northwest. Thus, many endemic species have survived on Socotra which became extinct everywhere else on earth.
