30 Climbing Terms Every Beginner Should Know! Part 1
Start of Main Video: 1:55
Climbing is a very technical sport that uses terms we don't use every day. I wanted to make a video to help new climbers pick up terms used in the gym and at the crag quickly. There are so many words we use that new climbers may not know and I narrowed it down to 30 I believe will help indoor climbers the most. Below are some links to sources I used to help me with this video; these contain more terms climbers can use so check those out if you'd like to learn more!
Terms from this video:
1. Hold - A place to temporarily cling, grip, jam, press, or stand in the process of climbing.
2. Problem - The path that a climber takes in order to complete the climb. Same as route in roped climbing.
3. Grade - The technical difficulty of a particular climb or bouldering problem.
4. Soft - A climb which receives a much higher grade than deserved.
5. Sandbagged - A climb which receives a much lower grade than deserved.
6. Send - To cleanly complete a problem.
7. Top Out - To complete a route by ascending over the top of the structure being climbed.
8. Flash - Climbing a problem on the first try.
9. Slab - A relatively low-angle (significantly less than vertical) section of rock (wall), usually with few large features.
10. Overhang - A section of rock (wall) that is angled beyond vertical.
11. Volume (or Feature) - A large, hollow bolted-on bouldering hold.
12. Beta - Information, or tips, about a climb.
