Are You Ready for the Sensor Revolution in International Development?

Pop Quiz: Are you wearing an activity tracker, like a FitBit or Vivofit? Do you have any other kind of sensor on your person? I bet you do, in fact, you're probably watching this while holding it.

Yes, your mobile phone.

Smartphones today have at least 14 different sensors to test all kinds of things that are happening in your environment right now. We can use those sensors right in the phone to do everything from water testing to ultrasounds.

We are also experiencing an amazing mobile phone dividend. All those sensors in the phone are getting faster, better, and cheaper thanks to Samsung and Apple. It's time we use those sensors to improve development outcomes.

From better cookstove monitoring to bandages that tell us the status of a wound, sensors have an almost infinite role to play in international development.

We need to embrace this change and experiment with sensors now, or we'll be left behind by the ultimate innovators - people in the developing world who are innovating with mobile phones and sensors already.
