Bhabhua Kaimur -The Untold Stories of Bihar’s India
Kaimur district in western Bihar, with headquarters at Bhabua, boasts a profound history rooted in prehistoric times when its plateau was home to aboriginal tribes like the Kharwars, Bhars, Cheros, and Savars. Part of the ancient Magadha Empire from the 6th century BCE under Mauryan and Gupta rulers, it later saw the rise of Harshavardhana and local chieftains like Udaysena. Conquered by Bakhtiyar Khilji in the 12th century, it passed through Mughal rule and became part of Shahabad district before being carved out as a separate district in 1991 (initially called Bhabua until renamed Kaimur). Dominated by the scenic Kaimur Range—an extension of the Vindhyas—with lush forests, plateaus, and rivers like Karmanasa and Durgavati, the region is famed for the Mundeshwari Temple (one of India's oldest functional Hindu temples, dating to around 108 CE, dedicated to Goddess Durga and Lord Shiva), the majestic Rohtasgarh Fort, cascading waterfalls like Karkat and Telhar, and the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary teeming with tigers and leopards. Blending ancient rock paintings, prehistoric settlements, Shakti worship traditions, and natural splendor, Kaimur invites adventurers and pilgrims to explore Bihar's rugged, timeless frontier of history and wilderness.
