Earthset Behind the Moon… #shotoniPhone

Captured by astronaut Reid Wiseman during a lunar flyby — a real Earthset, as our planet slowly disappears behind the Moon.

Filmed on a silver iPhone 17 Pro Max using 8x optical zoom. No filters, no edits — just a rare perspective from lunar orbit.

On Earth, phones attach location data to photos and videos. Out here, there’s nothing to tag — no place name, no coordinates that mean anything to us. Just space.

Phones have been to orbit before. In 2021, Jared Isaacman and the crew of Inspiration4 flew with consumer devices, including an iPhone 12 Pro Max, and even an Apple Watch Series 6 (PRODUCT)RED on Isaacman’s wrist. Today, astronauts still bring smartphones aboard missions to the International Space Station.

This isn’t the first phone in space — but capturing Earth slipping behind the Moon like this is still something extraordinary.

Here’s how astronaut Reid Wiseman described this view:

Only one chance in this lifetime...

Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn't resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as
@Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens.
@Astro VicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him.

I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view...this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.
