What Happened To This Airship?

The Dixmude, originally a German Zeppelin, was given to France as war reparations after World War I but met a tragic end when it exploded in mid-air off the coast of Sicily on December 21, 1923, killing all 52 on board. This incident ranks among the earliest major airship disasters, preceding other notable tragedies in aviation history.

Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels– from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!
