Bog Garden Tour | Sarracenia, Venus Flytraps, and More Carnivorous Plants!

Hey everyone,
The outdoor bog gardens are awake and there is so much beauty to share with you all! The Sarracenia or North American pitcher plants are the highlight in this video, where I show you around and talk about how I care for them. Sarracenia are herbaceous perennials in zones 3-8, possibly 9. Their native range spans from Canada to the Florida panhandle. S. purpurea being the most cold hardy to zones 3-5. While most other species would be suited for zones 5-8. We are in zone 7(b) and the are thriving! They grow naturally in wet habitats, so I keep the wet or moist at all times. Sarracenia never want to be dry. They can be grown in larger containers without holes to keep water in, or pots constantly sitting in a couple inches of water. You can see the wooden square frames I made and added pond liner to create the bog effect. The medium is roughly 80% peat with the addition of 10-20% sand. Perlite looks unsightly! The rain keeps these watered for most of the year. In the summer months, I use RO to keep them wet. I usually have to water 2 or more times per week when the temps are above 80 and full sun. Sarracenia LOVE full sun. The pine needles help keep the roots cool in summer, keep out weeds and insulate the rhizome crowns in winter. Possibly adding a boost of acidity to the soil? Although some growers do well indoors, these perennials are made for outside bog conditions. If you only have indoor space, then try Sarracenia purpurea var. venosa. It's a more southern form of the species and use to mild winters. It stays short , which makes it great for limited space. 6+ hours of strong light per day will keep it happy, usually in the form of a grow light. One thing to keep in mind if growing outdoors in a bog or container setting, is wind protection. Strong winds can easily break fresh spring pitchers.

If you love natives or just weird plants, with minimal effort you can easily grow striking Sarracenia. A bog garden is easy to make and I''ll have to do a vid on creating one. Every year they will get larger and the spring flowers are a joy!

Well, I hope ya'll enjoy the vid and let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Dom
