Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi began his studies in Baghdad and soon traveled extensively across the Islamic world to learn from leading scholars. He studied in Nishapur, Damascus, Mecca, and Egypt, collecting hadith and studying various Islamic sciences, especially hadith criticism.

He was a Shafi'i jurist and adhered to Ash‘ari theology.
