In this video, I walk you through the beginning stages of a refinishing project on this 1966 Knabe upright. This piano has been in the family for decades—if I remember right, it belonged to either the owner's mother or grandmother—and while it's structurally sound, the finish has definitely seen better days.

You’ll see close-ups of the lacquer damage, including widespread cracking, discoloration, and what looks like water damage that caused the original finish to break down over time. These are common issues I see in older pianos that have spent years in a home environment, expanding and contracting with the seasons. The good news is, the veneer underneath is beautiful—and once this piano is fully refinished, it’s going to look absolutely stunning.
