My BBC Copyright Dispute | How to Dispute YouTube Copyright Claims

This video describes my BBC Copyright Dispute and how to dispute YouTube copyright claims and how the copyright claims system works on YouTube. The BBC submits copyright disputes for ALL videos where the material has been used in a YouTube video

If you have made a fantastic YouTube video but it has been hit with a YouTube copyright claim there are a number of things you need to consider. Whether or not you have infringed any copyright should be the first thing you think about but it is not always straightforward.

I reached out to the BBC Copyright Dispute team of lawyers and they essentially said they dispute all videos on YouTube because if they didn't it would place them in breach of contract with other parties. I don't feel this is a good enough excuse when I don't believe my video breaches copyright law.

For what it's worth, I am a Barrister of England and Wales and specialise in intellectual property and copyright claims - my other channel was created to help people understand the law for free.

Copyright law can differ in each jurisdiction but broadly follows the same principles and there are many International applications for copyright protection. YouTube generally will not intervene on the specifics of a copyright dispute but the copyright claims system helps YouTube to prevent genuine copyright infringement.

As with many things on YouTube and the Internet in general, many disputes including copyright claims of infringement will end up in a local court which will fully address the facts in issue.

In this video, I talked through an example of where one of my videos has been subject to a YouTube copyright claim which I do not believe to be fair, just, or reasonable.
