Yemanja Brazilian Festival in Santa Cruz 2021
Yemanja is a powerful sea goddess from the Brazilian religion known as Macumba or Candomblé. ... Following the emancipation of Brazilian slaves in 1888, some gatherings were held in the open and others remained concealed. The gatherings, organized into communities, centered around a local leader, most often a priestess.
In comparison, Yemanja Festival is a relatively new celebration in Santa Cruz, California, brought here by our Brazilian and samba community. It's held each year in late September or early October at Twin Lakes Beach near the Crow's Nest Restaurant. Participants dress in white with blue accents. They dance in the sand and the ocean to the hypnotic beat of the drums.
A procession of mostly women, carrying baskets of flowers on their heads, dances along the path to the yacht harbor where they board boats and go out to sea. There they will present their gifts of flowers to Yemanja, the Goddess of the Sea, Mother of the Earth and Patroness of the Fisher Folks.
