HVAC in the house...no, the shop | RATTLECAN FAB SHOP with James O'Rear

After years (literally) of planning and saving we finally get the big update to the shop: heating, ventilation and air conditioning commonly known as HVAC. Our oldest son is in the HVAC field and he was able to help us source and install the system.

The old unit it is replacing is an air handler that had the air conditioning coil removed (so it was most likely used when installed into the shop 17 years ago) and only had the 15KW strip heating element. We decided to keep the existing duct runs as they were in good working order.

The new unit is a TempStar 2-ton system with a smaller 10KW heating element as we opted to upgrade to the heat pump functionality. Even with the heat pump, you need the strip heater to defrost the condenser during extreme heat pump events (or so I'm told). And since it is for the shop as opposed to our home we went with a SEER 15 rating to help economize the installation.
