STORYLINE:
Residents were assessing the damage on Friday after multiple Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip killed over a dozen people during the Muslim Eid al-Adha four-day holiday.

The latest deaths included two police officers who were killed at a checkpoint on Thursday night and their bodies were taken to Nasser Hospital, according to health officials there.

Fadi al-Astal, a displaced man in a tent encampment in Khan Younis, said that Israeli forces gave people less than five minutes to evacuate the area.

"We were barely able to grab children who were sleeping and escaped together. They didn’t even wait for five minutes; they hit the area in less than five minutes,” he said.

Footage from the aftermath of the strikes showed widespread destruction in Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah.

Residents were seen on Friday standing amid the ruins of destroyed buildings, while others searched through the rubble for items they could salvage.

The strikes came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel wanted to gain 70% control in Gaza, with Israel “tightening the grip” on Hamas “from every direction.”

This week, a Hamas militant and a commander with the Qassam Brigades, the group's military wing, were killed in the strikes.

Since a fragile ceasefire came into effect last October, 922 people have been killed in Gaza and 2,786 others injured, according to the Gaza's ministry of health.

The ministry is part of Gaza’s Hamas-run government, but is staffed by medical professionals who maintain and publish detailed records viewed as generally reliable by the international community.
