Today we talk about Laser welding and its effect on the used watch market. A watchmaker that lives close to me recently purchased a laser welding machine that in combination with his case restoration skills has become a game changer for used and vintage watches, as it means regular people like me and you can now restore parts of case without sending the watch to the factory. It means you can basically purchase a completely trashed watch and make it look almost factory new!
I personally love the idea as it means we get to save and enjoy many watches that were ready to be scrapped, BUT it also opens up a moral question. What stops dishonest sellers to restore watches and sell them as NOS or "rarely worn", as you really can't see the welding points once the case is completely finished.
Let me know your thoughts?
